Patti was born on March 5, 1935, to Harold and Margaret (McGraw) Nelson in Mount Pleasant, and she grew up on family farms in rural southeast Iowa near Fairfield.
She attended country schools, and she had to take a test to see if she could attend Fairfield High School. Thankfully, she passed with flying colors, for it was in high school where she met Keith Glenn, another member of the Class of 1953. The two dated in high school, broke up for a while and then reunited — Patti like to joke that “Keith looked a lot better as a pharmacy student,” but all joking aside, Patti and Keith had a bond that lasted for more than 60 years.
The two exchanged vows in March 1956 at Lockridge Lutheran Church, and the family moved a bit as Keith finished pharmacy school. They eventually had three boys — Bob, Dan and Bill — and settled in Fairfield.
Her boys remember growing up with a mom who “let us be boys.” She knew that boys were going to get into fights, get dirty and be a little rambunctious (or maybe with these three, a lot rambunctious). All three of her sons were standout wrestlers, and Patti loved going to their meets. She wasn’t a “yeller” in the stands; instead, she grabbed Keith’s arm when Bob, Dan or Bill took the mat and went along for the ride.
Patti was a woman of great faith, and for years she played in the bell choir at her church. Her love for music also meant that for years there was always a piano in the Glenn household. She also loved to quilt and was an excellent cook.
In 2008, when Keith fully retired, the couple moved to Fredericksburg to be closer to their grandchildren, and trust us, Patti was an outstanding grandmother who may have spoiled her grandkids a time or two or 100. If the over-under on when Patti would ask her grandchildren if they needed food was set at a minute, you wanted to take the under.
She was a longtime member of the PEO, a faithful member of the Fredericksburg United Methodist Church and a loving and supportive wife, mother and grandmother.
Her family and friends will dearly miss her, but they also are grateful that she touched their lives, is free from Alzheimer’s Disease and reunited with Keith.
Patti is survived by three sons; Robert Glenn of Fredericksburg, IA, Daniel (Paula) Glenn of Inver Grove Heights, MN, and William (Jill) Glenn of Fredericksburg, IA; seven grandchildren; Mark (Jamie) Glenn, Scott Glenn, Claire Glenn, Thomas (Rebecca) Glenn, Maya (Nolan) Nuss, Kael Glenn and Kyler Glenn; three great-grandchildren, Luke Anderson, Layne Anderson, Leah Glenn; one sister-in-law, Connie (Bill) Joy of Perry, IA; many nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband Keith on June 16, 2014; one brother, Larry (Inez) Nelson; one sister, Mary Jane (Virgil) Lindeen.
