Patricia Charlotte “Pat” Van Dorn dies at 80

Patricia Charlotte “Pat” Van Dorn, 80, of Waterloo, died Saturday evening, Sept. 3, 2016, at Northcrest Specialty Care in Waterloo. Pat was born on April 11, 1936, in Waterloo, the daughter of Howard H. and Catharine M. (Fettes) Boesen. Pat was raised in Waterloo and graduated from Sacred Heart Catholic School in 1954.  She loved dancing at Riviera Ballroom in Janesville and that is where Pat met the love of her life, John E. Van Dorn.  On Oct. 15, 1960, she was united in marriage to John at Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Waterloo. The couple made their home in Nashua, Plainfield, Clarksville, and Cedar Falls.  Pat attended NIACC in Mason City graduating as a Licensed Practical Nurse in 1986. During her life Pat worked at Keys Electric in Waterloo, John E’s Hardware Store in Nashua and Plainfield, and Wolter’s Convenience Stores in Waverly and Shell Rock.  Pat was a very warm, loving and caring person which was reflected in her duties as an LPN in Shell Rock, Cedar Falls, and Waterloo. Pat was a member of Blessed Sacrament Catholic Church in Waterloo.  She was also a past member of St. Michael Catholic Church in Nashua and Holy Name Catholic Church in Shell Rock where she taught religion classes and directed the youth choir.  Pat had an amazing voice and sang at many weddings and funerals. Pat believed in the power of prayer and angels.  She was known for having the best homemade pies. She enjoyed curling, sewing, cross stitch, watching movies, collecting bells and reading books and the Waterloo Courier.  However, Pat’s greatest enjoyment was her grandchildren.  They loved having sleepovers, going to the movies, and eating at Perkins where Pat always ordered eggs benedict with extra sauce. Pat’s memory is honored by: her three daughters; Catharine Van Dorn of Plantation, Florida, Renée Van Dorn of Nyack, New York and Susan (Ron) Rand of Clarksville; five grandchildren, Elizabeth, Nicholas, Vanessa, Jordan, and Zachary Rand all of Clarksville; and two sisters, Mary Ellen Hadachek of Dysart, Iowa and Barbara (Duane) Schafer of Waterloo.Pat was preceded in death by: her parents; her husband, John E.; a son, John Michael Van Dorn; three brothers, William, James, and Robert Boesen; and father & mother-in-law, Lyle and Dorothy Van Dorn. Mass of Christian Burial will be held on Friday, Sept. 9, at 10:30 a.m. at Blessed Sacrament Catholic Church, 650 Stephan Avenue, Waterloo, with Rev. Thomas McDermott officiating. Burial will be held in Mt. Olivet Catholic Cemetery in Waterloo. Public visitation will be held on Thursday, September 8, from 4 to 7 p.m. with a scripture service at 7 p.m. at the Kaiser-Corson Funeral Home in Waverly.
