Chickasaws snag pair of NEIC wins

Lead Summary

Zach Wemark knew the question was coming and cracked a smile as he was queried about the end of his perfect run at the free-throw line.  “Yeah, I knew about it. I knew I hadn’t missed but at least I got it out of the way,” the New Hampton senior said, “but as long as we won, I can live with it.”  And the Chickasaws did just that — holding off a gritty Oelwein team looking to break a five-year conference losing steak — with a 74-64 victory over Huskies, a night after using a fourth quarter surge to beat Decorah 70-57.  The wins pushed New Hampton to 10-8 overall and 6-4 in the Northeast Iowa Conference  and kept alive the Chickasaws’ hopes for a second-place league finish.  “I think right now we’re just playing more together,” Wemark said when asked about his team’s 8-4 record since the Christmas break. “It’s different guys every night, and no one really cares who it is. I know it sounds corny, but we’ve really come together as a group.”  More on the story may be found in the Feb. 7 Tribune.
