Chickasaws roll past Mohawks

Lead Summary

The second-largest school in Class 4A, roughly 20 more students and Mason City would be a 5A volleyball team; New Hampton, on the other hand, is in the middle of the pack of 3A schools.    But the Chickasaws weren't in the least intimidated by the Mohawks when they travelled to Mason City Thursday. And coach Jess Geerts even had a hash tag for it.    "We've got huge goals and that's our focus! #refuse2lose."    Compared to last year when the Mohawks won in straight sets, but only by 2-3 points in each game, the Chickasaws won handily this year. The third set was the only close one of the bunch as the NH girls won 25-18, 25-15, 25-22.    While the serving was a bit off the .959 percent New Hampton started their season with in a three-set win over Nashua-Plainfield, the Chickasaws — going 64-for-71 for .901 percent — nearly doubled their ace total at 13 for the match.     "We did well serving and that helps," Geerts said, "it wasn't perfect but the aces help make up for the errors."
