Chickasaw girls unable to dethrone league-leaders

Lead Summary

The first couple of minutes of the New Hampton-Crestwood girls basketball game went as planned defensively, as far as Chickasaw coach Matt Schult was concerned.     Halfway through the quarter New Hampton had a 1-0 lead, but this time it was Crestwood that caught fire.    “We wanted a low-scoring start to the game, we forced them to take some tough, outside shots and rebounded those,” said Schult. “But we were out of position a few times on our defensive stances.”    Three-point shots by Darian Wegner and Lauren Frerichs would keep the score somewhat close, but by the end of the quarter the undefeated Cadets would lead the Chickasaws 19-8 and go on to win 63-34.    “We dribbled right into their height a few too many times. At times we got the foul call and at other times they blocked us pretty solid. But we’re going to get blocked. We need to keep attacking, we were in the bonus early in the first half and in the second half too.”   For the rest of the story, please see the Feb. 3 Tribune.
