1973 volleyball team paved the way for today's Chickasaws

Lead Summary

Geri Wisner and Carol Cordes admit the details are a little fuzzy, but one thing remains crystal clear for both women when it comes to New Hampton’s first-ever state volleyball team.“It was very exciting,” said Wisner, who back in the fall of 1973 was a senior at New Hampton High School and a member of the team that was then known as the Chickasawettes. “I know the girls on this year’s team are excited and so were we.”Cordes and Jean Maricle coached that 1973 team that was in its second year of existence, and little did they know that the team they coached 45 years ago would remain the only New Hampton state tournament team until the Chickasaws beat Camanche on Monday night for the Class 3A regional title.“It’s been a fun day,” Cordes said Tuesday, “because every I’ve went today, we’ve talked volleyball. It’s brought back a lot of good memories.”
