Area farmers will have the opportunity to hear the latest information on corn and soybean issues plus a water quality discussion from Extension specialists on Thursday, June 18, during the 2009 Northeast Iowa Agricultural Education Association Spring Field Day at the research farm just west of Nashua.
Displays and a ‘Dutch-treat” will be available from noon to 1:30 p.m. and the programs will proceed from 1:30-4:30 p.m. All Northeast Iowa producers are invited to participate.
This year’s featured speakers include:
* 2009 Corn Production Issues – Roger Elmore, ISU Extension corn specialist.
* 2009 Weather Predictions – Elwynn Taylor ISU Extension climatologist.
* Insect Management Issues for 2009 – Erin Hodgson, ISU Extension entomologist.
* Water Quality Issues – Matt Helmers, ISU Extension ag engineer.
Residue Management Training will be offered from 9 a.m. to noon with specific topics including: Residue Management and its Value to Soil Quality and Carbon Credits; Implement Adjustment; and Cover Crops to Reduce Nitrate Leaching. Three CCA credits in soil and water management can be earned. The program is free but pre-registration is requested by contacting the Floyd County Extension Office at 641-228-1453.
The agronomic tour is free and open to the public. Pre-registration is not required plus Certified Crop Advisor credits are available for a nominal fee.
The Riverton Lucky Clovers 4-H Club will serve a “Dutch- treat” lunch and refreshments at the headquarters building at the Research Farm. Static displays related to crop production and utilization; environmental and water quality will be available in the headquarters building for viewing.
