New Hampton -

Less than 12 hours after his team put together a solid victory in its final regular-season dual meet, New Hampton coach Nick Hemann sat in the Chickasaws’ locker room looking ahead.

“I was really happy with the kids last night,” he said Wednesday morning, “but I’m probably even happier with the way they came back to work this morning. They want more.”

And the “more” begins on Saturday, when New Hampton wrestles at the Northeast Iowa Conference tournament in Waukon.

That kicks off what Hemann hopes will be a hectic month for the Chickasaws.

On Feb. 6, they head back to Waukon for the Class 2A sectional tournament, on Feb. 9, they hope to be wrestling in the regional dual-meet tournament back in New Hampton, on Feb. 13, they head to Manchester for the district tournament before heading to the state tournament that begins on Feb. 17.

Hemann believes his team is ready for a strong postseason run. After going 2-2 against a predominately 3A field at the Waterloo West Siddens Invitational Saturday, the Chickasaws routed Waukon 51-16 on Senior Night Tuesday.

Before taking on the Indians, New Hampton honored its four seniors — Randy Schilling, Kyle Neitzke, Alec Lang and David Nelson.

“It was nice to send them out of here like that,” Hemann said, “but then again, we’re hoping that we take care of business and they get to wrestle here again.”

Schilling came up with one of the more impressive wins on Tuesday as he held a 6-2 lead over Waukon’s Nathan Klocke before turning and pinning him with six seconds left in the match.
“It’s something we want out kids always to be looking for,” Hemann said. “If you have a decision, get a major. If you have a major, get a tech. fall. If you have that, get the pin.”

Hemann said Waverly-Shell Rock is the prohibitive favorite Saturday, but he said the race for second should come down to New Hampton, Charles City and Decorah.

“We feel like we’re in that mix,” Hemann said, “and it’s important, too, because everyone’s going to be there, except for MFL, that’s going to be in our sectional.”
He paused for a moment and smiled.

“Conference is important,” he said, “but we know sectionals is where it really matters and we want to go back to Waukon on a roll.”
