New Hampton competed in two rounds of the regional softball tournament, but they played at the West Delaware site three nights. The first night, July 5, they edged 10th-rated West Delaware 1-0, on Monday, July 7 they started a game against 15th-rated Western Dubuque, but it was called due to lightning in the area. The following night they finished the game, but with two runs in the top of the seventh, the Bobcats won 5-3.
The one run against West Delaware came in the sixth, and started with a hit by Carlie Schnoebelen. A steal, error and single by Darcy Lechtenberg pushed Schnoebelen across with the run.
Dani Goodwin was 3 for 4 at the plate and Morgan Roths tripled. Singles by Sheena Hovey and Taylor Moore rounded out the hit total for the Chickasaws, which finished at eight.
Megan Mahoney was on the mound, and pitched one of her better games of the season. She allowed, of course, no runs, walked no one, scattering six hits with four strikeouts.
The next night Western Dubuque put their first three batters on board and scored them all to take a 3-0 lead in the top of the first. Home runs by Sheena Hovey in the first inning and Jess Schwickerath in the second were both solos, bringing the score to 3-2, and that would be the score at the time the game was called.
New Hampton was up first the next night but Western Dubuque held the Chickasaws from scoring until the fifth. With one down, Goodwin started the rally with a single, Hovey and Beth Anderson also singled, with Goodwin scoring on the Anderson hit.
That tied the score after five complete. In the sixth the Bobcats led off the inning with a single and the next batter bunted. Sheena Hovey made the throw to first, with Schwickerath coming over from second on the play, Schwickerath then made a quick throw to second, where shortstop Carlie Schnoebelen was covering base. The runner was caught in a pickle between Schnoebelen and Kelsey Glaser, coming in from left field and making the tag for the double play.
Going into the top of the seventh Western Dubuque had runners on second and third with one out. Megan Mahoney K’d the next batter for out #2, but a blooper single to shallow right field scored a pair of run before Mahoney struck out the final batter.
The two runs would hold, although Sheena Hovey laced a single in the seventh but was stranded.
Megan Frerichs started on the mound and pitched four innings on Monday. She allowed three runs, all earned, on four hits with one walk and strikeout. Megan Mahoney worked the three innings on Tuesday, allowing two runs, also earned, on four singles, one walk with three K’s. Western Dubuque had one error, the Chickasaws two.
Western Dubuque had a much easier game the next night, defeating Dubuque Wahlert in the regional finals 6-0.
