Eleven runs in the first inning pretty well assured the Turkey Valley baseball team of a quarterfinal win over South Winn July 5, they went on to a 14-3, five inning victory. But in the semifinals Tuesday they were held to a run, falling to Nashua-Plainfield 2-1. The Trojans end with a season record of 24-16.
In the win over the Warriors, the TV boys added to their 11 first-inning runs with two markers in the third and one in the fourth. Drew Loftus led the batting at 3 for 3 with a double, three RBI and three runs scored and Brad Winter was 3 for 4 with two runs scored and two RBI. Kyle Bouska, Quinn Meirick and Jacob Denk were all 2 for 4, Bouska with three runs scored, Meirick with two RBI and Denk with a double and two RBI. Brady Kuennen was 2 for 2 with a double, two RBI and runs scored and Mitch Balik singled and batted in two runs.
Jacob Denk recorded the win, in five innings pitched he allowed three runs, two earned, with three hits, walks and strikeouts. There was one Trojan error.
“We hit the ball really well and never let up,” commented coach Dan Stepan. “Jacob pitched well. We knew we would have to play well to beat South Winn.”
Nashua-Plainfield put the first point on the board in the third inning of the semis, Turkey Valley scored a run in the top of the sixth inning, but the Huskies matched their run with one in the bottom half of the inning that would end up being the winning run.
There were only four Trojan hits, doubles by Denk and Meirick and singles by Bouska and Winter; Winter had the RBI and Bouska scored the run.
Jeff Rassman threw the six innings, allowed two earned runs on three hits and four walks with four K’s. “Jeff pitched a great game, we just didn’t hit as well as we have.” Coach Stepan gave credit to the N-P pitcher for that. “It was a great season,” he added.
