New Hampton/Turkey Valley heavyweight Tom Clark puts the finishing touches on a pin of Staley’s Preston Thomas during Thursday night’s Doc Carr Duals.

Wrapping up titles

NH/TV wins third-straight NEIC dual title before beating Missouri power

As far as New Hampton/Turkey Valley coach Nick Hemann was concerned Thursday night, it was mission accomplished.

It wasn’t because New Hampton/Turkey Valley won three duals to claim the title at what was the Doc Carr Duals this year. And it wasn’t even because the Chickasaws laid claim to at least a share of its third straight Northeast Iowa Conference dual-meet championship.

“We wanted good matches, and we got quite a few,” Hemann said after his team manhandled both Crestwood and Waverly-Shell Rock and then held off Missouri power Staley for a 35-30 victory. “That’s what we want right now. The wins are nice, sure, but even the matches we didn’t win, they gave us a lot of teachable moments. This was good for us.”

New Hampton got off to flying starts against both their NEIC rivals — winning the first five bouts against the Cadets to take an 18-0 lead and then absolutely steamrolling Waverly-Shell Rock early as NH/TV built a 34-0 lead thanks to pins by Hunter Pesek, Cale Reicks, Noah Glaser and Max Schwickerath, a major decision from Michael Blockhus and decisions by Max Babcock and Noah Fye.

Babcock got the Chickasaws off on the right foot against the Go-Hawks when the junior bested Class 3A ninth-ranked Ian Heise 6-4 at 132.

“We got some good momentum right out of the gate there,” Hemann said. “That’s the kind of wrestler Max can be for us. When he wrestles with confidence, he can beat good kids and that was a key for him. He came out knowing he could win and he put together a nice match.”
