New Hampton resident Avey Johnson went on to become a well-respected sports official after his professional baseball career came to a premature end because of an Army injury.

New Hampton man has nary a diamond regret

Johnson enjoyed his time playing game he loved in minor leagues

Even though Alvin “Avey” Johnson is 91 years old, he can still remember in detail the memories of his baseball career — memories that brought him joy as he talked about his playing days.

Johnson is believed to be one of three New Hampton High School alumni to play organized professional baseball — the others being Duane Josephson and Cole McDonald.

Josephson, of course, played in the majors from 1965 to 1972 and was an all-star in 1968 while McDonald is the 2015 New Hampton graduate who pitched at Iowa and was drafted by the Houston Astros this past summer.
