It was a long time coming but New Hampton players celebrate the school’s first-ever trip to the state baseball tournament with the traditional “dog pile” after the Chickasaws beat Oelwein in the Class 2A substate game.

Chickasaws finally get trip to Principal Park

When Cory McDonald took over as the head coach of the New Hampton baseball program in 2009, one of his main goals was to get the Chickasaws to the state tournament for the first time in school history.

After nine years of coming up just short on a multitude of occasions, New Hampton was finally able to accomplish this in 2019.

“It took us a long time, but we finally did it. It was a lot of work. That’s why it feels so good — nothing was given. This is a program that had three winning seasons in 20 years, 10 consecutive losing seasons until 2009,” McDonald said.
