I have had an Iowa driver’s license for almost 60 years and for the most part, I have considered myself to be a good and responsible driver.
As I approach my 75th birthday, my opinion of my driving skills has changed dramatically. Within the last three weeks, I have twice driven into an intersection without being aware it was my place to turn. (Call it daydreaming.)
While in the intersection, I tapped the breaks and turned without signaling. Both times, there was a car behind me, which I wasn’t aware of. Both drivers honked their horns.
Later, I drove through an intersection and a driver intersecting my direction honked. Again, I was not aware of the other car, nor the fact that I went through a yield sign.
So much for my driving skills.
My problem was lack of awareness, a not uncommon problem for seniors. I have given my license to the Department of Transportation and was given an identification card.
I am grateful to the three people who honked at me. Without them, I would still have a high regard for my driving skills and would be a menace on the road.
