On April 1, 1974, I became one of the youngest new publishers in the state of Iowa. Last week, I became the oldest new publisher in the history of the state of Iowa. I think I can hear my parents laughing from above.
After the first full week of “Round 2”, my knees are a little wobbly, but I’m still standing. I can’t work as hard as I could way back then, but I’ve learned how to work smarter.
For those of you who offered kind words of encouragement last week, I thank you. For those of you who just bit your lip and looked away, I also thank you.
I realize that this new job is going to be a challenge probably more than any of you. This is my second time around and I know it can be done. Compared to an unpaid nine-year vacation, how tough could this be?
Over the past nine years, I have discovered that retirement is the only time in your entire adult life when you are absolutely powerless over the conditions around you. At least here I have a fighting chance of success and keeping my head above water.
Back in ’74, I got an eviction notice from the sheriff and a $10,000 overdraft notice from the bank my first week; and both came before I got moved into my new office or found the checkbook. Compared to that, life is good this time around! Wave if you agree.
As promised, we are trying to make a positive impact on your lives in this economy, beginning right here at the Tribune.
Check out the new “Half Price Stimulus Sale” and let me know your thoughts at nhpublisher@mchsi.com. You don’t need to give your name or write anything as long as you vote either good or bad.
The results of last week’s pole on rating the Tribune A-F were predictably a grade of C or average.
To cast your vote, just e-mail your answers to me at nhpublisher@mchsi.com or call, write or stop in. I will also take quiz suggestions.
Thanks and see you next week.
