New Hampton, Iowa -

Iowa recently became one of a half dozen states to legalize gay marriages, and Chickasaw County had its first gay marriage last week between two men from Florida.
Personally, I think gay marriage is immoral, unnatural and should not be legal anywhere. But that is because of my religion and upbringing from my past. Today, it is considered new, different, politically correct and seen by many liberals as “progressive”. Neither are particularly good reasons.
I must admit I have never been faced with this dilemma, so I can’t speak firsthand on the subject. As a spectator, however, I am confused and put off like many of you.
Personally, I don’t much care what other people do as long as they don’t try to convert or preach to others. And I feel the same whether someone is trying to convert me to their religion or to their way of life. I dislike all people and causes that feel they must demonstrate and publicly disrupt everyone else in the name of their cause. I also resent being forced to subsidize fringe lifestyles.
What I worry about more is the impact on innocent children from a gay marriage? While gay marriages might draw attention, controversy or discrimination, they certainly couldn’t be any worse than dysfunctional straight marriages torn apart by drug abuse, alcoholism, child or spousal abuse and infidelity.
The comedian, Robin Williams, had a good point ... “Why should straight people be the only ones unhappily married?”
While secrecy, abuse and betrayal cause pain in many dysfunctional straight marriages, maybe the publicity and public pressure of gay marriages actually makes the family bonds stronger.
Maybe Bill Clinton was right when he opted for, “don’t ask, don’t tell” sexuality in the military when he was President.
I’m sure I know some very nice gay people and I’d like to keep it that way. As long as nobody lobbies the other, wants special treatment or financial subsidies, we will get along just fine. As far as I’m concerned, you can do anything you can afford to do as long as it doesn’t hurt anyone else.
As Christ, himself, said, “Let those among us without sin cast the first stone.”
