There were few surprises in the New Hampton city election on Tuesday as incumbents in the mayor and city council races were re-elected.
Mayor Darwin Sittig was voted in for his fouth term, with 269 votes. Write-in candidate Joseph Tierney received 99 votes.
“I would like to thank you for the votes that I have received and hope to have your support for the upcoming years,” said Sittig on Wednesday.
In the only contested council race, Don Schueth was re-elected in a 57-32 win over challenger Mabel LaHaug. Council members Robert Martin, William Hurd, Stanley Perkins, Robert Clites and Nita Geerts were also re-elected for additional 2-year terms.
For the first time, all New Hampton voters cast their ballot at one location – the New Hampton Community Center.
“I think it worked real good, exceptionally good,” said Election worker Norbert Shileny. “At other elections, people come and they’re in the wrong ward and they have to go somewhere else.”
According to Auditor Joan Knoll, a voting center can be used for city, special and school elections.
