Grant Cuvelier told me how “sometimes you think your parents are coming down on you pretty hard, but then you usually realize later they were probably right.” So when his mother Leslie Cuvelier told him over the weekend to get his hair cut – she said, “he was getting too shaggy” – he just did it. Moms, you know?
But he didn’t know what she already knew, that on Nov. 25 at Turkey Valley High School, it would be announced that he is the 29th “Turkey of the Year.” There would be pictures taken.
Grant is a Turkey with a special Turkey Valley heritage.

Elementary Principal Barb Blake submitted a letter of retirement to New Hampton Community Board of Education members at Monday night’s meeting.
The letter stated the resignation would be effective at the end of the current school year. Blake also thanked the board and the teaching staff for their help and support during her 10 years in the position. She particularly enjoyed watching the children grow and mature as they passed through the school system.
“I am going to miss the kids, but I just need to do something different. I wanted to give the district enough time to make plans,” Blake said prior to the announcement.

Farm Financial Planning is Iowa State University Extension's farm financial analysis program. It consists of one-on-one financial counseling, a computerized analysis of the farm business, and referral to other extension programs or outside services that may be useful.
Farm Financial Planning is for anyone who wants to understand a complete picture of their farm financial situation. It helps take the guesswork out of whether or not a change would increase profitability and improve cash flow. It will help the producer evaluate the farm business and determine whether or not a change is desirable. It provides an in-depth plan for the farm business so the operator and the lender can make decisions for the future.

It’s a case ripped from the headlines and presented during a mock trial Wednesday at the New Hampton Middle School.
Students from NHMS and Tripoli participated in the 25th annual Iowa Middle School Mock Trial Tournament, which is a program of the Iowa State Bar Association Center for Law and Civic Education. The students presented the case of Kelly Procope vs. Winkies Food Corporation, which is inspired by the events of the Liebeck vs. McDonald’s famous 1990 case involving a customer who brought suit against the fast food restaurant over hot coffee. Although there were some similarities to the famous case, the facts in the mock trial were significantly altered so the students would learn to limit their decisions to only the facts that were presented.

Students at St. Joseph Community School participated in the annual Thanksgiving basketball game Tuesday. The tradition started in the early 1970s with the Indians vs. the Pilgrims, which was made up of only boy teams. Political correctness has changed that to Red vs. White teams with girls participating as well. Each grade gets to play, with the relaxed rules and lowered nets for the younger students. This year’s Turkey Shootout ended with the Red team winning 46-37.
