The Chickasaw County Supervisors have decided to sell a parcell of property in Bassett.
The 99-by-135-foot parcell is located on the south-west corner of U.S. Highway 18 and Beaumont Avenue. It was once the site of a gas station.
The supervisors said the county aquired the property a few years ago when new state mandates for underground storage tanks went into effect.
“At the time, property owners had a hard time complying,” said First District Supervisor John Huegel.
Eventually, the property owners abandonded the gas station and the county took possession of the parcell. In 1994, a state program was launched to help fund clean up of underground storage tanks. Chickasaw County Auditor Judy Babcock learned about the program and approached the board about submitting the property into the program.
“We cleaned up the propety through the program,” Babcock said.
Following the excavation of the tanks, the Chickasaw County Engineers office installed wells and was responsible for monitoring any underground contaminates.
The propety recently received a No Further Action cetificate from the Iowa Department of Natural Resources and has been deemed legal for the county supervisors to sell.
“We pulled the wells, and we’re good to go,” Chickasaw County Engineer Dusten Rolando said.
