New Hampton, Iowa -

Contributions and pledges to the 43rd annual Jerry Lewis MDA Labor Day Telethon totaled a recordbreaking $65,031,393 – $1.2 million more than last year.
Of those contributions, more than $6,245 came from area people who donated to Logan’s Bowl held Aug. 30 at Bowlaway Lanes in New Hampton.
“We are still getting some donations in the mail.  We will continue selling T-shirts, refrigerator magnets and car magnets, too,” said Lyndsey Manderfield. “We raised nearly $2,000 more than last year.”
This was the third year the Manderfield family of Waucoma organized the event in honor of their 4-year-old son, Logan, who was diagnosed with Duchenne’s Muscular Dystrophy three years ago. (Their story appeared in the Aug. 22 issue of the New Hampton Tribune.)
The local event included several drawings. The prizes and winners were:
The black matted 8-by-10 inch autographed print of former Iowa linebacker and current Pittsburgh Steeler Mike Humpal went to Ed Crawford.
A gold matted 8-by-10 inch autographed print of Humpal went to Tom Burgart.
A 40-by-16 inch, six photo progression print of Humpal's interception at Syracuse went to Frank Niehaus.
The 54-by-38 inch quilt went to Lois Shield.
A dry erase board with Logan's picture went to Tim Orvis.
A John Deere toy tractor went to Nancy Humpal.
Shampoo, conditioner and foot cream went to Becky Eichenberger.
Two Lynch BBQ gift baskets went to Sue Mahoney and Kira Tenge.
A Texas Hold 'Em game went to Todd Nelson.
A basket of candles went to Sheri Dietzenbach.
A TJ Hunters T-shirt went to Ed Crawford.
A TJ Hunters gift certificate went to Paula Rosonke.
A birdhouse went to Margo Pleggenkuhle.
A Martin Brothers cooler went to Denise Shekleton.
A Martin Brothers chair/cooler went to Sheri Dietzenbach.
The contributions will enable the Muscular Dystrophy Association to fund research to find treatments and cures for muscular dystrophy and related diseases.
Funds also support hundreds of MDA medical clinics; send thousands of children to MDA summer camp; and provide assistance with the purchase of equipment such as wheelchairs and leg braces.
The 21 ½-hour event originated from the South Point Hotel, Casino & Spa in Las Vegas was broadcast to nearly 40 million viewers by some 180 television stations that comprise MDA's "Love Network."
MDA is a national voluntary health agency working to defeat muscular dystrophy and related diseases through programs of worldwide research, comprehensive services and far-reaching professional and public health education.
MDA's programs are funded almost entirely by individual private contributors.
