Members of the New Hampton American Legion Post 38, the Lawler American Legion Post 279 and the Alta Vista VFW Paul Yohann Post 4069 marked Veterans Day with ceremonies at the Legion Hall and the New Hampton High School.
The cold and wet weather forced members to move the annual courthouse ceremony at 11 a.m. to the Legion Hall on Main Street. New Hampton High School students Kaylee Becker performed “Taps” while Julianna Bonfig played “Echo” for the veterans. American Legion Auxiliary members provided a lunch following the ceremony.
In the afternoon, the Legion and VFW members participated in the New Hampton High School Veterans Day ceremony. New Hampton student Matt Samec gave introductory remarks.
Music teacher Nathan Shivers directed the NuHi Chorale in "America the Beautiful."
Legion Vice Commander Jon Hapgood said in his comments at both ceremonies that, “We are fighting a global war in terrorism, so we will have veterans for a long time, and we need to take care of our veterans.”
Students and veterans viewed the documentary "Honoring WWII Veterans of Chickasaw County" which was created by the Foundations of English Class students.
The students and veterans observed a moment of silence, and Kaylee Becker performed “Taps” while Julianna Bonfig played “Echo” to close out the ceremony.
