Community celebrates Veterans Day

    Members of the New Hampton American Legion Post 38, the Lawler American Legion Post 279 and the Alta Vista VFW Paul Yohann Post 4069 marked Veterans Day with ceremonies at the Legion Hall and the New Hampton High School.

    The Harold Redman American Legion Post and American Legion Auxiliary hosted a Freedom Walk at the Lawler Area Veteran Memorial.
    The post commander Jack McKone and the Auxiliary president Nancy DeSloover placed a memorial wreath at the base of the new memorial during the event on Sept. 8.
    The invocation was given by Vic DeSloover. The Legion Post held a memorial service with Taps and a three gun salute. The silent walk took place around the memorial. Legion members had a meeting after the walk at the fire station in Lawler.

Four area women turned 100 this year

    It was the year the first Model T Fords rolled off the lines in Detroit, there were only 46 states, Teddy Roosevelt was president and Wilbur Wright took off on a mind-bending demonstration flight of two hours and 20 minutes.

     The year was 1908, and four women who lived in the Fredericksburg area were born. Margaret Bravener, Thelma Dawson, Elsie Winter and Hilda Lienau all celebrated their 100th birthday this year. Over the past century, the women have lived through many changes in the world.

New Hampton -  Melissa Jean Wulf and Jeremiah Wayne Zeien, both of 
Cedar Rapids, are planning an October wedding.
   

New Hampton - Jack and Carolyn Rosauer will celebrate their 50th 
wedding anniversary on Oct. 11 with a 6 p.m. Mass at Immaculate 
Conception Church, North Washington, followed by a family dinner at 
the Pinicon.
 

    The fifth annual Veteran Appreciation Day was Saturday, Sept. 13, in St. Ansgar. This year’s event had the largest participation ever. Approximately 85 veterans, spouses and children attended.

Denis and Rosemary Schwickerath are being honored at an open house at the Alta Vista Municipal Hall, Alta Vista on Saturday,  Oct. 4,  from 1 - 4 p.m. The event is being hosted by their chidlren and spouses and is open to public.
    Rosemary Troyna and Denis Schwickerath were married Oct. 7, 1958 at 
St. Boniface Church in Ionia.They reside in Alta Vista.

Kara Rae Benning and Jason Thomas Meler exchanged  wedding vows Aug. 2, at Peace United Church of Christ,  Fredericksburg. Pastor Bob Myren and Father Wally Hyclak, St. Mary of 
the Falls, Olmsted Falls, Ohio, officiated at the 4 p.m. ceremony.

Leo Kuehn and Patricia Lentz both of North Washington, were married Sept. 21, 1948, at Immaculate Conception Church in North Washington.

They have eight children:  Wanda (Don) Sanderson, Atkins; Paula 
(Dwight) Boyum, Rochester, Minn.; Ellen Price (Dave), Ames; Glen 
(Ruth), New Hampton; Gene (Nancy), New Hampton; Margie (Kevin) Reicks, 
Forest City; John (Ronda), New Hampton; and Tim, Ionia.  They have 20 
grandchildren and one great-grandchild.

     HJ, a Weimaraner from Fredericksburg, was recently inducted into the Iowa 2008 Animal Hall of Fame for his act of heroism which saved his owner's life during a heart attack.
    On most days, HJ, a friendly Weimaraner, is the official greeter and everyone's favorite friend at the Engelbrect's Farm House Bed & Breakfast in Fredericksburg, but in the early morning hours of Easter Sunday 2007, HJ became a hero.

    After 35 years of law enforcement service, Chickasaw County Sheriff’s Deputy Lance Manson decided Friday he would turn in his badge on the 30th anniversary of the Davis Rally.
    Manson has been a big supporter of the rally. For the past 20 years, he has volunteered to work during the weekend event. One of his last official duties was to lead the Night Light Parade down Main Street Saturday. After the parade, members of the Davis Rally crew paid tribute to Manson for his years of service and cooperation with the rally.
    Manson began his career in law enforcement as a city officer in Nashua. He worked there for five years before joining the Chickasaw County Sheriff’s Office.

    Contributions and pledges to the 43rd annual Jerry Lewis MDA Labor Day Telethon totaled a recordbreaking $65,031,393 – $1.2 million more than last year.
    Of those contributions, more than $6,245 came from area people who donated to Logan’s Bowl held Aug. 30 at Bowlaway Lanes in New Hampton.
    “We are still getting some donations in the mail.  We will continue selling T-shirts, refrigerator magnets and car magnets, too,” said Lyndsey Manderfield. “We raised nearly $2,000 more than last year.”

    Trinity Lutheran Church, New Hampton, will celebrate its 50th anniversary of ministry to the New Hampton area Sunday, Aug. 10, with a special worship service, church dinner and afternoon program.
    St. Paul Lutheran Church and St. Olaf Lutheran Church, both of New Hampton, merged together on Aug. 10, 1958, with a new name, Trinity Lutheran Church. On that day, a processional march was held from the St. Olaf church to the St. Paul church building where morning services were held for the new Trinity Lutheran congregation.

     Nashua’s Little Brown Church held its annual Marriage Reunion Sunday, Aug. 3. This was the 56th reunion for the church which was established in 1855. 
    Registration began at 8:30 a.m. and went until after 1 p.m. Couples came from all around to renew their wedding vows at the ceremony. Prizes were awarded to couples who had the longest marriage, most recent, traveled the farthest and most family members attending.
